The birthplace of Kutani ware is Kutani, Yamanakacho, in Ishikawa Prefectue, Japan. Modern-day Kutani ware refers to a style of porcelain fired in Teraimachi, Nomi, and also in nearby towns like Kanazawa, Kaga, and Komatsu.

Kutani is typified by a base coat of line drawings in indigo blue, on top of which the

Kutani "gosai," or five colors -- red, yellow, green, purple, and navy -- are applied in a thick impasto style. Featuring bold printed motifs of painterly landscapes or birds and flowers, Kutani ware gives the viewer a strong impression.This use of color is said to have been inspired by Morigake Kusumi, a master painter of Japanese paintings in the Kano style. Since 1655 to the present, Kutani ware has featured different motifs and vessels appropriate to each era, but the use of the Kutani five colors has remained consistent.

Today, Kutani ware is used for gifts by the Imperial Household Agency, and it is known worldwide as "Japanese Kutani" and widely enjoyed by prominent figures in numerous countries.
